Vertigo / Leucoderma

Leucoderma, also known as vitiligo, is a distressing skin condition. The word literally means white skin. There is a gradual loss of the pigment melanin from the skin layers which results in white patches. Vertigo is defined as a subjective sensation of rotation of objects around the body or rotation of the body around the object. Vertigo usually occurs as a result of a disorder in the vestibular system (i.e., structures of the inner ear, the vestibular nerve, brainstem, and cerebellum).

Dizziness is defined as a sense of swaying. Leucoderma occurs due to injuries, use of sticker bindis or kumkum or and burns etc. whose quality is not guaranteed. Leucoderma can occur because of stress and emotional disturbances. This disease should be cured as soon as it is detected, but it can not be cured hundred percent. Giddiness is defined as a sense of unbalance.

Causes of Vertigo / Leucoderma

The causes of this disease are somewhat ambiguous but can possibly be linked to excessive emotional stress, worms or other parasites, gastric disorders, deficit hepatic function, typhoid, external injuries or burns and in many cases, due to a family history of the disease.

1. Ears:
(a) External ear e.g. impacted wax on ear drum.
(b) Middle ear e.g. Eustachian tube block due to a common cold.
(c) Inner ear e.g. acute infection.
2. Infection of the nerve of ear to the brain.
3. Brain tumor.
4. Motion sickness, seasickness, travel sickness.
5. Drugs.

Treatment of Vertigo / Leucoderma

1. Patient is made to lie down.
2. Reassure him.
3. Consult a doctor.

Remedies for leucoderma:

  • A useful remedy is red clay found by the river side or on hill slopes. The clay should be mixed with the ginger juice and applied over the white spots once in a day. The copper contained in a clay brings back skin pigmentation and ginger juice serves as a milk stimulant, facilitating increased flow to the spots.
  • The paste of turmeric and mustard oil is also beneficial in the treatment of vitiligo. Take about five hundred gram of turmeric and put it in eight litres of water at night. It should be heated in the morning till one kg oh water is left. It should be strained and mixed with fine hundred grams of mustard oil. This mixture should be heated till only the oil is left. It should be applied on white patches every morning and evening for few months
  • Babchi seeds combined with tamarind seeds also cures. Equal amount of seeds be put in water for three to four days. They should be made into paste and applied to the white patches for a week.
  • A paste made from seeds of the radish is useful in treatment.thirty five grams of these seeds should be powdered in vinegar and applied on white patches.
