Candidiasis
Candidiasis commonly called yeast infection and thrush. Thrush is Types of candidiasis. Thrush is a common opportunistic infection in people with HIV. Infection of the mucous membrane predominates, more widespread and deep-seated infection involving internal organs can occur. Candidiasis is an infection caused by Candida fungi, especially Candida albicans. These fungi are found almost everywhere in the environment. Some may live harmlessly along with the abundant native species of bacteria that normally colonize the mouth, gastrointestinal tract and vagina. Candida is kept under control by the native bacteria and by the body's immune defenses. If the native bacteria are decreased by antibiotics or if the person's immune system is weakened by illness malnutrition, or certain medications Candida fungi can multiply to cause symptoms. Symptoms may be absent or include burning or dryness of the mouth, loss of taste, and pain on swallowing.
Candidiasis can affect many parts of the body, causing localized infections or larger illness, depending on the person and his or her general health. Candida depends on a living host for survival. It is a normal inhabitant of the human digestive tract from early infancy, where it lives without causing any disease most of the time. If the host's defences are lowered, the organism can cause infection of the mucosa the skin, and rarely, deep-seated infection. On rare occasions, men may also experience genital candidiasis. VVC occurs more frequently and more severely in people with weakened immune systems. Treatment of Candidiasis
Common Treatment of Candidiasis
- Antifungal drugs which are taken orally, applied directly to the affected area, or used vaginally are the drugs of choice for vaginal yeast infections.
- This infection is usually treated with intravenous amphotericin B (Abelcet) or fluconazole.
- Advice should be given on the washing and disposal of underwear, and avoidance of contamination from the perianal region at defecation. The wearing of cotton as opposed to tight nylon underwear should be encouraged.
- If your immune system is weak, your doctor may handle minimal local infections with home care. More serious infections may need IV medications given at the hospital.
- Some systemic drugs are taken in pill form. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Less than 20% of people have these side effects.
